The journey from Mumbai to Pune via Lonavala is a beautiful ones. Most trains between Mumbai and South India travel on this section except for those which take the Konkan railway route via Goa. The train crosses the Western Ghats in this part.
At Karjat Station, a set of two or three Electric Locomotives is attached behind the train to push it up the ghats. These engines are decoupled at Lonavala station and the train then proceeds to Pune. For a large portion of the route there is a valley on one side. There are tunnels and old bridges for a significant part of the route and it is lush green, misty and cloudy specially during the rains.
