2. In the absence of an official statistical release from the Council or MHRD, these are probably the most authentic school wise statistics available for the current academic year. It is possible that there are a few minor deviations and fluctuations because of the missing records (estimated to be not more than 2-3%, and less than 1% for the ISC-2013 Class 12 Examination). But neither we, nor the media covering us, claim that this an official release.
3. Please note that these tabulations are completely objective and based on academic averages alone. These do not account for the varying levels of effort that schools have to put in due to their remote locations and the challenges that they face in educating students from a spectrum of socio-economic backgrounds. And so, this report is not necessarily and indicator on what the school's input is the development of the student: with the limited data that we have (only academic) it is hard to segment what component of the annual performance can be attributed to the student's socio-economic and home background, and what component can be attributed to the quality of education imparted in the school.
ICSE and ISC 2014 ResultsThe Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) conducts Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Class 10 examination every year. This year, the exams began on March 3 and concluded on March 29. The exams were conducted in 2,500 exam centers will be evaluated at 650 centralized centers. - Last year out of the total aspirants, who had attempted the ICSE Class 10 exam, 98.20 per cent students had qualified the examination.
- The ICSE Exam has been conducted in 64 written subjects out of which 23 are Indian languages and the rest are foreign languages.
- For ICSE in India, the best pass percentage has been achieved by the Southern region i.e. 99.66 per cent, followed by the Western region (99.46 per cent), Eastern region (98.02 per cent) and Northern region (97.30 per cent).
- In 2013, for ICSE, special difficulty cases such as Dyslexia totaled to 652, out of which 28 candidates obtained above 90 per cent marks, Visually Challenged candidates were 37, six of them obtained above 90 per cent. Besides, 16 candidates took the examinations from the hospital out of which 4 candidates scored above 90 per cent.
- The candidates appearing for ICSE Exams (Class 10) are required to clear at least six subjects. One of it should be English, any Second Language and History, Civics Geography (compulsory subjects) and any 3 optional subjects to receive ICSE certification.

| City Montessori Schools | In a list of 346 major ISC Centers (with 70 or more candidates), the Gomti Nagar branch ranks 15, three more branches rank at positions 59, 62 and 63, and even the last ranked branch is at position ~150 in the list. The student enrollment per branch is quite high; indicating that quality (of education) and quantity (of students) need not be exclusive - a large number of students are being delivered top notch education. |
| La Martiniere Schools | There is a branch for Girls and a branch for Boys in both Lucknow and Kolkata. All these four schools are ranked in the top 100. These schools had a common foundation but are now run rather autonomously. |

This part of the report, focuses more on big schools with more than 200 candidates. I focus on these primarily because, for a country with a population like that of India's, there's a limited impact which small islands of excellence can have. Also, the expanse of their outreach is far higher than schools which are extremely sticky about admissions, and also do a lot of filtering of students by the time they appear for the board examinations. A quick look at the spreadsheets will show you that for the most part, performance of big schools is somewhat poorer than their medium-size counterparts. However, there are some really big schools, with a very large number of candidates, who seem to be doing an extremely competitive job which needs to be called out. Can big schools deliver good results? Do they require excellence in management? Does the quantity of intake always necessarily have to come at the cost of quality of the academics? Here are a few big schools which seem to be performing very well. It needs to be recognized that maintaining excellence in schools with 200 or 300 students is a significantly harder task than maintaining excellence in a school with 70-100 students.

Performance based on ICSE-2013 Class-10 Examinations
Top-50 Schools This chart takes into account large to medium schools with 70 or more candidates, i.e. at least the equivalent of 2 sections of 35 students each. Schools where Class X is often the "terminal class" and the point after which students leave the school and seek admission to Junior Colleges (as is often the case in Maharashtra and Karnataka) do seem to perform better. This is understandable because the students of those schools have greater incentive to excel in the board examinations.
