Jurong Bird Park, Singapore : Big Bill - Toco Toucan

Toco Toucan

( From the description plate at Jurong)

A bird with a very big bill. The bill functions like a pair of tongs to pick fruit and grasp prey. It also blends well with foliage and serves as a good camouflage for the Toucan. When it is too warm, the toucans radiate excess heat through their large bill. To reduce heat loss at night, they sleep with their bills tucked under the wings.
